The church, which was built in the early 15th century, represents an iconic landmark in Kranj's panorama. It is one of the most exceptional examples of Gothic architecture in Slovenia, serving as an inspiration for many later churches, such as those in Radovljica, Škofja Loka, Kamnik, and Šentrupert in Lower Carniola.
The history of religious structures on this site dates back to the period before the arrival of the Slavs.
