Since 1798, this area has been designated as the city cemetery, but ceased to be used before the Second World War. It was later transformed into a memorial park, which now hosts numerous historical monuments. Among them are the tombstone of the poet Dr. France Prešeren, the tombstone of the poet Simon Jenko, Majdič's tomb with the beautiful marble relief "Resurrection," and the monument to the victims of Basovizza and Vladimir Gortan, who was shot in Pula and is one of the oldest monuments to the victims of fascist violence in Europe.
