On December 28, 1952, on the Main Square between the Church of St. Kancijan and the Prešeren Theater, a 5-meter high bronze statue of the greatest Slovenian poet was unveiled. The monument, the work of academic sculptors Frančišek Smerdu and Peter Loboda, was supervised by Jože Plečnik and Josip Slavec, who were at the time working on the arcades on the facade of the theatre. It is the largest statue of the poet in the world.
