After the first encounter with the Venetian Republic in 1145, when Koper lost and was forced to swear "allegiance" to the Doge of Venice, it did not get involved in later conflicts and remained loyal to the Venetians. As a gesture of gratitude for this loyalty, in 1182, it monopoly rights over the salt port for a period of 29 years, with exclusive rights to import salt to the mainland between Gradež and Pula. This emphasised Koper's economic dominance among the Istrian cities.
Today, Taverna is a popular venue for numerous events.
