On the site of the former Romanesque basilica stands the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary, known as the Cathedral of St. Nazarius. It is an ancient building dating back to the 11th century and has been renovated several times. The church, one of the largest in Slovenia, measures 70 x 25 meters. The interior is adorned with works of art by Vittore Carpaccio, including the marble tombstone of St. Nazarius. A special feature is the Rotunda of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, once the baptistery of St. John the Baptist, redesigned in the 18th century.
