The central stone bridge of the Triple Bridge, built in 1842, replaced the former wooden bridge, which held strategic importance in medieval times as it connected the lands of northwestern Europe to the Balkans. Between 1929 and 1932, Plečnik added two pedestrian bridges, creating a unique architectural feature of Ljubljana. He replaced the railing with stone balustrades, added lamps, and included staircases on the terrace by the river, where poplar trees became a distinctive part of the bridge.
