The zoo is situated on the southern slope of Rožnik and is located in a natural environment of forests and meadows. It is part of a protected landscape park and is a 20-minute walk from the city center.

The zoo hosts animal species from all continents, with particular attention given to those characteristic of the Alpine, Pannonian, and Mediterranean regions.
