The Pokljuka plateau, the largest forested area in Triglav National Park, stretches for 20 kilometers in length and nearly the same in width, at an altitude between 1,100 and 1,400 meters. Beech forests once dominated the plateau but were heavily impacted in the 19th century due to charcoal production from beech wood.
Pokljuka is a popular destination in all seasons due to its altitude, fresh air, and positive health effects. In winter, it attracts visitors with skiing, ski touring, sledding, and cross-country skiing, and hosts a world-famous biathlon competition every year. From spring to autumn, Pokljuka is popular for cycling, hiking, and Nordic walking.
